Profiles in Courage for Health Care

By Juanita - Posted on 21 September 2009

If 75% of Americans want a public option included in health care reform and we cannot get it through Congress, then something is very wrong.

Passing halth care reform will take every Democrat in the Senate to stand up for Americans. We have come to expect Republicans to vote against the needs of Americans in favor of their corporate donors, but we are angry that some Democrats are wavering.  We have had a discussion about health care in America - it was called an election, and the people spoke very loudly.  For Democratic Senators to back away from public option is unacceptable.

Therefore, we have decided to take action.

At our September meeting, Fort Bend Democrats Club voted to send copies of President John F. Kennedy's book Profiles in Courage to the 14 Democratic Senators who are wavering on heath care.

Since mail can take months to reach Senators, and their email programs will not allow comments from people living outside of their state to use it, we purchased the books and had them shipped to a friend of the Club's, Barbara Heil, in Washington, D.C. We attached a handwritten note to each book.

The note says, "Will your name be in the next edition? Please act with courage by supporting the public option for all Americans rather than appealing to the interests of insurance companies.  Thank you, Fort Bend Democrats."
Barbara promises to send pictures of the books being hand delivered.

If you want to contribute to help us pay to send this important message, please click here.  Or, if you just want us to know that you support our efforts, please let us know.

Check back later in this week for pictures of the books being delivered.

We suspect that there's very little we can do to persuade Republicans to do what is right for Americans. But we can and will demand that Democrats do the job they were elected to do.

How is it possible that 75% of Americans want a public option in health care reform when 80% of Americans like the current health care coverage they have? "Eighty percent of Americans were satisfied with the quality of care they received." http://www.timesoftheinternet.com/113127.html

The two polling questions are not mutually exclusive. For example 75% of Americans might prefer Vanilla Ice Cream, yet 80% of Americans would be satisfied with Chocolate Ice Cream.

If this is not clear enough, please let me know and I'll try to find a visual explanation.

Let's try a little more reliable source than "Times of the Internet."  Gallup itself.  Only 2% of Americans believe that our health care system "does not have any problems."  Additionally, 73% of American believe that our health care is in crisis, or has major problems.

What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party?  I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things every one.
