U.S. Conference of Mayors Speaks-Out Against Repubican War On Women

The U.S. Conference of Mayors, a non-partisan organization made up of representatives from about 1,200 cities across the country, voted on Saturday to pass a resolution in support of women's reproductive rights and funding for Planned Parenthood.

The resolution outlines the numerous efforts by state and federal lawmakers over the past several years to restrict women's access to abortion and family planning services, including attempts to mandate ultrasounds before abortions, defund Title X and Planned Parenthood, ban abortions after 20 weeks, jeopardize access to birth control, compel the Internal Revenue Service to audit rape survivors who have abortions and allow hospitals to refuse emergency abortion care to women. The mayors promise to fight back against these efforts in the future and speak out on behalf of their female constituents.

Constable Ruben Davis makes Erroneous Arrest Claim

With less than a week remaining in the Fort Bend Constable Precinct 2 Democratic Primary, the election is becoming heated between incumbent Constable Ruben Davis, and his opponent, Missouri City Police Sgt. Daryl Smith. [...]

On Monday, Constable Davis -- a retired Houston Police Department officer who's been in office since 1996 -- had a photo on his Facebook page of Sgt. Smith in a campaign t-shirt (next to two uniformed Missouri City Police officers) with the caption, "Missouri City Police Arrest Daryl at my Campaign office!!" [...]

Missouri City Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald said that Sgt. Smith had not been arrested, thus the posting was not true.

Newcomer Hubbard surprises voters in U.S. Senate race

Sean HubardOf the six top-tier candidates running for the U.S. Senate, only Sean Hubbard may have to worry about being challenged by eagle-eyed poll watchers, suspicious that he is too young to vote. Fresh-faced and slight, the Dallas resident is 31, but looks half that.

The young Democrat likes to remind audiences that Joe Biden was 29 when he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware, and like the current vice president, Hubbard is articulate, engaging and well-versed on the issues.

"The Republicans' problem is their voters are white, aging and dying off," said David Bositis, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, who studies minority political engagement.

N.A.A.C.P. Votes to Endorse Same-Sex Marriage

"The board of the N.A.A.C.P. voted to endorse same-sex marriage on Saturday, putting the weight of the country’s most prominent civil rights group behind a cause that has long divided some quarters of the black community."[1]

When leaders lead, especially on difficult social issues that demand the end of an injustice or the expansion of liberty, people will follow. The announcement Saturday that the NAACP passed a resolution supporting marriage equality is the most important sign yet that President Obama's public support of it had the power to change hearts and minds.
